1. Products Identification:

PORTLAND XQ BLEND
Silica sands are typically composed of a minimum of 97% quartz and have a variety of uses in industrial and ceramic applications.
Silica sand/ natural aggregate blends are typically composed of approx 50% quartz and 50% processed naturally occurring rock and have a variety of uses mainly in the construction industry.
3. Hazards Identification.
Prolonged exposure to the fine airborne particles may be harmful due to the inhalation of respirable crystalline silica.
Silica sand and Natural aggregates can cause abrasion and irritation to eyes and skin.
Silica sand and Natural aggregates can cause gastrointestinal irritation if ingested.

4. First Aid Measures.
General: Unlikely to be hazardous if handled correctly.
Eye Contact: Avoid contact with eyes. Irrigate copiously with clean fresh water. Seek medical advice if soreness persists.
Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water. If prolonged contact causes irritation seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Give water to drink and seek medical advice.
5. Fire Fighting Measures:
No fire or explosive hazard.
6. Accidental Release Measures:
Personal Precautions: Avoid breathing fine dust, wear dust mask/respirator and goggles.
Environmental Measures: Silica sand and natural aggregate are inert and should not cause long term environmental damage.
Methods of Cleaning: Vacuum cleaning is the preferred method. Utilise water spraying to prevent airborne dust. Avoid dry sweeping that creates dust.
DO NOT allow to enter drains or water courses.
7. Handling and Storage.
Handling: Assess manual handling requirements
Handle in ventilated areas and minimise the creation of airborne dust.
Do not inhale or ingest dust. Goggles and dust masks should be worn.
Smoking, eating and drinking should be prohibited in areas of storage and use.
Storage: Bagged silica sand and aggregates should be palletised and stored in dry, secure, ventilated areas.
8. Exposure Controls/ Personal Protection.
Prevention Measures: Occupational dust surveys are recommended for personnel with regular exposure to respirable dust.
Corrective action shall be taken where MEL or OES at risk of being exceeded.
UK EH40 MEL EXPOSURE LIMIT 0.3mg/m3 respirable crystalline silica.
UK EH40 OES EXPOSURE LIMITS 10mg/m3 total dust; 4mg/m3 respirable dust.
Respiratory protection: Dust masks/ respirators. Airstream helmets to approved standard if conditions are dusty.
Eye Protection: Goggles to an approved standard.
Skin Protection: Gloves and Overalls.
9. Physical and Chemical Properties.
Physical State: Silica sands are normally clear/ grey powders depending on grade. Natural aggregates cover a wide range of sizes and colours.
Solubility in water: Insoluble.

11. Toxicological Information
HARMFUL. Risk of irreversible effects through inhalation. Danger of cumulative effects. Long term exposure can cause permanent damage to lungs and disease such as Silicosis. Silicosis is a reportable disease to the HSE.
12. Ecological Information.
Silica sand is involatile, insoluble and resistant to biodegradation.
Natural aggregates are classified inert and not considered to pose ecological concern.
As an inert material, an approved solid waste disposal or landfill may be used.
No special carriage precautions. Material suitable for sealed bags.

Workers must be informed of the presence of crystalline silica and trained in the proper use and handling of this product as required under applicable regulations.
