1. Description.

White powder used as a pozzolanic additive in mortars, plasters, renders and grouts.

2. Composition.

Natural kaolinitic clay that has been calcined between 750°C and 950°C to produce amorphous metakaolin. Composed of silica, alumina and trace elements. The total free respirable silica content is less than 0.5%

3. Hazards Identification.

The material is not classified as dangerous. As the material is a powder containing crystalline silica (quartz), prolonged exposure to excessive levels of dust from this material might lead to respiratory problems. For safe use, respect occupational exposure limits.

4. First Aid Measures.

Inhalation:

If inhalation has occurred, remove patient to fresh air. Particles, if inhaled can irritate the upper respiratory tract, and dry mucous membranes. If irritation persists seek medical advice.

Eye Contact:

Avoid contact with eyes. Remove contact lenses. Irrigate copiously with clean fresh water. Seek medical advice if any symptoms develop.

Skin Contact:

Avoid prolonged contact with skin. Can cause allergic skin reactions in hypersensitive individuals. Always wash skin with soap and water, and use protective creams against allergic symptoms.

Non Flammable.

6. Accidental Release Measures:

Avoid creating dust. Wear respiratory protective equipment in case of exposure to high level of airborne dust.

Spillage: Recover powder by vacuum and dispose (landfill) in accordance with the waste regulations as non hazardous waste. Wet china clay on floor can be a slipping hazard.

7. Handling and Storage.

Handling:

Use appropriate engineering controls to avoid creating dust. Handle in ventilated areas and prevent dust diffusion,

Storage:

Store in sealed bags or tubs in dry covered storage. Protect from air and rain.

8. Exposure Controls/ Personal Protection.

Provide adequate ventilation. Maintain good standards of industrial hygiene. Respiratory protection: Avoid inhaling dust. Wear mask during mixing.

Hand Protection: Barrier creams may help but are no substitute for full physical protection. Seek advice from glove manufacturers.

Eye Protection: Wear eye protection at all times. Provide eye-wash.

Oxidising properties: Not applicable.

Solubility: Insoluble in water and commonly used solvents.

Specific Gravity: 0.27

10. Environmental/ecological Information.

No specific adverse effect known.

11. Disposal

Dispose as Non Hazardous waste in approved landfill sites accordance with the Environment Protection Act 1990. Do not allow lime mortar to enter drains, septic tanks or water-courses.

12. Transport.

Not dangerous for transport. Always transport in sealed containers that are secure.

13. Toxicological Information

No acute toxicity.

Prolonged or excessive exposure to repairable dust containing crystalline silica might cause silicosis, which is a pulmonary fibrosis. There is some scientific debate going on about the possible carcinogenicity of crystalline silica.

There is a body of evidence supporting the fact that increased cancer risk would be limited to people already suffering from silicosis. According to the current state of the art, worker protection against silicosis would be consistently assured by respecting present regulatory occupational limits.

14. Other Information
